The Kayaking is not too hard even if you are the parent of kids in their twenties and not in the best shape LOL. Kayaking through the mangroves was actually a highlight and I recommend the earlier trip so you can see. Also, bring bug spray. Even though we sprayed, we still got lots of bites. The kayaking was a lot of fun, seeing the bioluminesence was cool, but after a few minutes of stirring them up and thinking they are pretty cool, you are ready to return. I'm glad I saw it, but don't think I need to do it again. read less

But we enjoyed kayaking in the dark and the little flecks of luminescence we could see were fun. The tour guides were all personable and knowledgeable and wanted us to learn and enjoy. There were a few inexperienced kayakers who made it more entertaining for those of us who had done it before. The tour guides tried hard to accommodate different skill levels and kept things as organized as possible for 30 people on 15 kayaks. We thought it was a fun adventure and the bioluminescence was a bonus! Would recommend! read less

Some of the reviews had given me concerns about the trip, but we had a great time and enjoyed seeing the genuine, non-manufactured, natural phenomenon. Main takeaways: 1. The bioluminescent effect (seeing a glow around your paddle or hands in the water) is very cool. 2. We went with a waxing, half moon. While the effect might have been more brilliant with less moon, when we stopped in the bay, they had a solution for that--so if your chance to do the tour is at a time with moonlight, don't hesitate. 3. You'll be paddling about 90 or so total minutes at night across a shallow bay and through a winding mangrove lined channel that will have other tour groups heading the other way. There will be about 15 kayaks in a line in your group. You may bump a tree here or there--it's not a big deal. No one tipped and the water is shallow. 4. Main guide and shore staff were great. I thought asst guides could have helped folks into and out of their kayaks more--but that was a small point. 5. Wear something you don't mind getting wet and don't take cameras, wallets, etc. 6. I recommend the tour. read less
KinBeantown3/02/2015Great trip Very nice time with entertaining and friendly guides. Guides said 85% of glow was lost with hurricane but still very cool to see with tarps.

And were so glad we did. Miguel was our guide - great job explaining how to kayak and explanation when we were in the bay.
Fun time - just stay relaxed because there will inevitably be people who are horrible kayakers! As there were 5 of us I rented a car to drive here rather than rely on the minibus, and this gave us opportunity to look around Las Croabas Park and get a really good meal too.
There are several kayak companies working here but they coordinated very well. We hardly noticed the other 2 or 3 groups going out on the same trip as us.
The kayaking is gentle and the guides were great in keeping us aligned. It was really cool kayaking through the mangrove canal and then into the bay.
We had some moonlight so had to use the tarpaulin to get the full effects, but it was a really great experience.
Obviously, you will get wet in a kayak, so bring a towel and a change of clothes. The public changing facilities are very limited and get wet quickly, so be warned.
The trick is to set your expectations accordingly. This is an outdoor adventure and you have to "go with the flow" to some extent.
The guys also provide water and snacks and really don't bother to take a camera as you should just experience the trip through your eyes and not through a cellphone trying to take pictures that simply won't work.
So glad we made the effort to enjoy this. read lessuktravailer9/10/2019 -

We started at the head of the group and going with the current down the canal. Our guide Gaby was very aware of the surroundings and always gave us notice of obstacles or other kayakers in the area. The night was calm and it was so dark at times in the canal with the overhead branches that we could only see the lights at ends of the kayak. The bay had other kayakers but we were far from them. We came back against the current so a bit more challenging but not that difficult that beginners like us could not do. Overall an amazing experience!! read less

The staff and equipment were excellent. It is very dark and you really need to know how to kayak at least a "little". I felt sorry for the guides who had to deal with novices who slowed the whole group down. My only complaint is that the whole mangrove and bay is TOO crowded because local authorities have licensed too many tour groups. You have to stay on your toes to stat with your guide and group and not get confused by other kayaks in the channel with our tour groups doing the same thing. Kayaking at night in the mangroves and bay is cool but it is crowded. read less

We had a very large group of 10 - 12 kayaks and it was a little stressful to line up all the kayaks twice. The kayak behind us kept hitting us, and the other group was very loud with talking. It was a little crowded with all the other groups as well. If you are not a group of 2, you will be separated from your other party and may not see them for the trip. That being said, the kayak ride out there through the mangroves was so cool. You could here all the sounds of the forest, and the trees make a canopy over you. Once we were out there the 4 grouped kayaks put a tarp over our heads (? Covid safe) so we could see the effects. Although the lead seemed nice and friendly, definitely an excursion feel to the whole trip. I don’t think you can see it any other way, so worth it to see the phytoplankton natural wonder. All the other groups seemed to follow the same path, so issues not unique to this company. Overall, it was a B experience, and I would do it again. read less

In terms of Biobay itself, a bit disappointing since those illuminating bacteria seemed to be very dim (possibly due to the full moon today, more due to pollution) and very hard to capture the light.
We all enjoyed ourselves, from other aspect though. The guides provided adequate instructions for beginning kayakers. The kayak were the sit down type. Since I have prior kayak experience and sorta in shape (a circle is a shape), it wasn't difficult. And even for the novices, crashing into the mangrove trees is half the fun. The water was warm and shallow in the mangroves. And I didn't get bitten by a single bug (the guides provided mosquito spray).
They took us out in the middle of a lake and taught us about the organisms that lived in the water. Since we picked a day with very little moonlight, the organisms were much more vibrant in the color. On the way out, my eyes got accustomed the light and it was a spectacular view of the stars. Some of the chubbies had trouble getting out and the guides towed them.
In my opinion, If this is the 2nd or 3rd best bio bay in Puerto Rico then the other ones must be beyond belief because this one is amazing. A definite must see attraction. I will do this again the next time I'm in Puerto Rico.
Recommendations:
1. This is a Puerto Rico must see! Plan your trip based on the lunar calendar. The best nights are the ones right before the new moon when it is the darkest.
2. Book early and choose the late session if possible. If this company is not available, there are others.
3. Eat something light before you go out. It is a mild workout.
4. Wear swimwear, long sleeve or windbreak, and sandals with straps (I wouldn't recommend flip flops but it is possible) is best. Apply mosquito repellant generously.
5. Plan to get abit wet so leave a towel and a change of clothes in the car. A snack wouldn't be a bad idea.
6. Stop by one of the local vendor afterwards for some rum or beer. A nice way to end a great evening. read lessJulian S.8/16/2014
