A Natural Wonder: The Magic of Bioluminescent Puerto Rico
Experience one of the world’s most breathtaking natural phenomena: the glow of bioluminescent Puerto Rico. Part science, part magic, this spectacular light show is created by tiny organisms that emit a glow when the water is stirred.
On your tour, you might see this as sparkles trailing your paddle or as an intense glow lighting up the water around your kayak. The brightness varies nightly due to natural factors like the moon and tides, which makes every adventure truly unique.
Even on nights with a more subtle glow, the experience of paddling under the stars, surrounded by the sounds of the mangrove forest, is unforgettable. This is more than a tour; it’s a nighttime adventure through one of the island’s most beautiful natural treasures.
It’s the natural emission of light by microscopic organisms in the water. In Laguna Grande, these organisms glow when stirred such as by a kayak paddle or hand.
Bioluminescence varies nightly from faint sparkles to a strong glow. Due to it being nature-dependent, we can’t guarantee brightness levels.
To create a darker setting and enhance visibility, a tarp is used when needed to block out moonlight and other artificial light sources.
We operate out of Kayak Village in Fajardo, Puerto Rico.
You may get wet up to the waist when boarding the kayak, depending on water levels at the launch area. Wear comfortable, quick-drying clothing; footwear is required. A change of clothing for after the tour is optional.
This adventure is not allowed for pregnant guests or those with casts, heart conditions, neck/back issues, epilepsy, dizziness, or suspected intoxication. Participants must be a minimum of 6 years old to participate.
The maximum weight limit is 240-lb (108-kg) per person. Weight checks will be conducted before each session.
Youths 6-14 must be accompanied by an adult in tandem kayaks, and teens 15-17 must be accompanied by an adult on the tour.
You have 24 hours before check-in time to request changes or cancel for a full refund. All cancellations must be made directly to Island Kayaking Adventure by phone or email. Guests who are no-shows or arrive late will be charged the total amount. – Same-day reservations are considered final sales.
Groups of 10 or more guests must cancel one week before for a full refund. Cancellations made within a week, no-shows, and late arrivals will be subject to a full charge.
Weather conditions may cause marine activities to be canceled, resulting in total refunds. If you choose not to attend without prior cancellation notice, you will be charged if the adventure proceeds. Tour cancellations may occur at the last minute or on-site.
Rebooking – Requests made within 24-hr of check-in require a $25 + tax fee p/p and must be submitted at least 2-hr before check-in. Late requests are treated as no-shows. Once rescheduled, the booking and rebooking fees are non-refundable.
When you book your adventure with us, we reserve a space in our calendar exclusively for you, making it unavailable to other clients. Our cancellation policy must be strictly adhered to maintain fairness towards our staff and other clients.
Puerto Rico has three bioluminescent bays: Mosquito Bay (on the island of Vieques), La Parguera (in Lajas), and Laguna Grande (in Fajardo).
For the best and most accessible experience on the main island, Laguna Grande in Fajardo is the top choice.
While Mosquito Bay is technically the brightest, it requires a separate trip to the island of Vieques. Laguna Grande offers a spectacular and reliable glow that is much easier to access. As a protected nature reserve where motorboats are prohibited, its fragile ecosystem thrives, ensuring a vibrant and magical display that you can witness up close from a kayak.
