Questions? FAQ
The answers you need
Yes, most of our guests have little or no experience. We provide all the necessary training and instruction needed to have an enjoyable and safe experience. We also paddle in double-seat kayaks (which are exceptionally stable).
Fitness Requirements. You will paddle for two miles, one mile in and one mile out, at a moderate pace. As a result, you should be reasonably fit and agile (with upper body strength) to get in and out of the kayak while keeping your back at a 90-degree angle.
Are we able to swim in the lagoon?
No, we are not allowed to swim to preserve the ecosystem. Things that we use on a daily basis can have an effect on the microorganisms (hair gel, deodorant, lotions, perfume, insect repellent with DEET, etc.).
Is it safe for kids?
Yes, this is a great activity to immerse kids in nature. The minimum age to do the adventure is 6 years old.
Can I take pictures?
You can bring water cameras, however, photos of the Bioluminescence need special film and equipment. If you value your digital camera leave it in your car. Remember, this is an adventure for your memory.
Should I bring water and snacks?
We provide water and snacks (chips and granola bars) after the adventure.
Weight capacity?
The maximum weight limit per kayak is 450 lbs (204kg), with no more than 225 lbs (102kg) per person.
You're going to get wet! It is recommended to wear comfortable, quick-drying clothing, such as swimsuits, and to bring a change of clothes for after the tour. Water shoes or sandals that you don't mind getting wet are required.
Yes, reservations are required to guarantee a seat on the tour. When you book online or via phone, this is your reservation.
Visa or Master Card are accepted when making a reservation over the phone or online. When you enter your credit card information, you are paying for your tour and reserving your seat for the date you have chosen. Without payment, we cannot hold or reserve any spaces.
Yes. In the event that you must cancel your reservation, we have a 24-hour cancellation policy for all our adventures. You have 24 hours before check-in time to change the date or cancel for a full refund. All cancellations must be made by phone or email directly to Island Kayaking Adventure. Guests that are no-shows or late arrivals will receive the full charge. Same-day reservations are considered Final Sales.
Groups of 10 or more guests must cancel one week in advance for a full refund. Cancellations of less than a week, no-shows, and late arrivals will be fully charged.
Weather cancellations?
Marine activities are subject to weather conditions, if we are forced to cancel the adventure due to the weather conditions guest will receive a full refund. We will contact you to inform you about the cancellation. If you decide not to attend without our cancellation notice you will be charged if the adventure goes out.
We equip each kayak with low-intensity lights. This will assist you in following the group through the canal. All our guides are required to carry additional emergency lights.
No, swimming is not permitted at Laguna Grande, and all visitors must wear their lifejackets at all times. The water canal where we paddle is mostly 3 to 5 feet deep.

I was a bit wary since we booked last minute and all of the other companies were booked up, but Island Kayaking Adventure was fantastic. After a quick safety briefing we climbed into out two man kayaks and headed out into the water. MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE GOING ON A DARK NIGHT WITH LITTLE MOONLIGHT! It was nearly pitch black, so we followed the glowstick on the kayak in front of us. The path through the mangrove trees was good for a laugh as everyone was bumping into trees and the kayaks around them. About half an hour in, the water began to glow as we paddled. By the time we emerged into the bay, the water around us was bright. You can't get out of the kayak as your body oils are bad for the ecosystem, but you're free to paddle and splash your hands. I'm not a big kayaker, but even when my arms were tired I didn't want to stop paddling because it was so beautiful! read less

The bio bay is amazing. It's as if it could be something out of a movie. The sun was setting as we went into the mangrove channel, which is very narrow, and that was hard enough. It was frustrating because there are many people that have never kayaked before and therefore get in the way, hold people up, paddle in the wrong direction, cause chaos as they argue and disagree with each other, etc. It was completely dark on the way back. This was significantly harder not only because there was no light and it was hard to see, but because there were tours trying to go into the channel as we were coming out.
The bio bay was worth seeing, however, I would not do this again. read lessJenniferSpe6/01/2014Fun end to a full day in Fajardo Relaxing kayak trip in a beautiful area. The bioluminescence was way cooler than I expected. It was a bright night and early but the tarp really worked.

The morning of the excursion, they told us that the luminescence levels are a little low due to weather and moon, but still decent enough, but they still give us an option to cancel for full refund, or continue as planned for an additional 15% discount in price. I took the later option, as we wanted the experience anyway.
We reached the given address around 8 PM. Everything was very well organized. We were given our instructions, and the gear. We got into our kayaks, and started rowing. Most of use were in-experienced. Initially we tried to paddle our way through the winding narrow path through the mangroves, but it was very quickly clear that we needed help. So our 4 guides tied our kayaks together in groups and each guide dragged us through the waters.
After more than half an hour of rowing, we reached the open waters. We gathered in a group, were given tarps to put on our heads, (as there was too much light) and that's when we saw the bio luminescence.
So what we saw was just a very tiny amount of bright dots in water when you shake the water vigorously. That's all. It was good, but nothing spectacular.
Our tour guides were very professional. They stayed on top of things all along. They pulled us most of the way to the open waters, and all the way back to the shore. We had fun. read lessHamayon M6/30/2021 -

Streets are tough navigating and there is little to no parking in the park area. Then you have to walk around until you find a tent that might be the one you are looking for and ask. Hopefully you have a few minutes to run your wallet back to your car after you sign the waiver and pay. Leave everything in your car. They're not in a big hurry, so really it's no big deal. They do provide bug spray, but it wasn't bad our night. Remember to also stop before you get to town to go the bathroom because there is only one in the park and you have to pay. Mike was our guide who was quite enthusiastic and willing to answer all questions and was pretty knowledgeable (ALRIGHT GUYSS!). There were supposed to be a couple other guys with us and they may have gone by us during the trip, but didn't really help us stay together, just carried the tarp and camera. We seemed to get pretty spread out so that it was hard to get any directions from the front. Trip out is easier, as you can always stay to the right. Trip back in you need to stay right until you meet with an actual boat, which apparently needs to stay on that NW side and so you have to go left ("YOUR OTHER RIGHT!" they berate you from their boat). When you get close to the lagoon, it is almost better right there, still in the river, to see the bio lights in the water. We could see pretty well our night, but we still did the tent thing out in the lagoon and got pictures taken. Try to stay still so your pic is less blurry (good luck). Nice of them to post it on Facebook so it was easy to get my copy. Overall it was a good time and we all had fun for less than $50pp. read less

We found them on a document provided to us from our resort. Went to their website and the identification of the excursion and payment was very smooth. You are provided very detail instructions and a map link to get to the meet location. There were two start times at 6:45pm and 8:45pm, and we opted for the later start to have more darkness. Pay attention to the moon 🌙 lamination as light takes away from the experience you may have. I recommend experiencing this light without a lot of stuff. No need to bring phones and stuff place you risk chance you could lose it or it get wet. We started out walking to our kayaks in knee deep water and the team assists you with getting in. You must have a partner as no solo kayaks. You will get wet at least waist high. You traverse through the mangroves until you reach La Guna Grande. As we get close you could see the bioluminescense paddling the water. They use colored lights to identify the difference in groups. We received some background on how it occurs. Then, they provided tarps to cover kayaks to help make it darker to see better. Great experience!!!! read less

The company supplies bug spray. I forgot to use. There were a few mosquitos - but not too bad. Would recommend using the spray. Don’t read too much into this comment - just my one error.

The staff were extremely helpful and attentive. As soon as we arrived (Uber from San Juan) the owner made a great effort to help us secure transport back to San Juan for after the tour, with a local taxi driver (it is hard to get Ubers out of Fajardo) even though it was not part of the tour's offering. They provided bug spray (highly recommend using it or coming prepared).
The kayak tour itself was great, however I would recommend having some prior experience with kayaking (we were in a double kayak, and my friend had no prior experience so it was a struggle). One of the guides, Danny, was especially kind and helpful in hooking his kayak onto ours to tow us because we kept getting stuck in the mangroves and sand banks. The bioluminescence was very cool, but having visited other sites in past trips, I would recommend planning ahead and visiting one of the brighter and farther out bioluminescence sites in PR if you can. read lessThibbz12/29/2021Excepcional, excelente , única ❤ Una experiencia excepcional y única fui con mi niños y se lo disfrutaron al máximo. In regards to Island Kayaking Adventure and their guides, I was more than satisfied. They had quality equipment, gave us a decent explanation of what to expect/the itinerary for the night, spent time educating us about bioluminecense/mangroves, AND took pictures for us. This can be a stressful/scary experience for some and the guides did an excellent job communicating and keeping us safe through a pitch black tunnel full of roots and occasional flying fish.
As for the biolumenecense, it was average at best. I was happy to check it off my list but wasn't as amazed as I thought I would be. We were told that they had recently experienced a "mass die off" of the plankton and that it was currently in the middle stages of repopulating itself (this was in January of 2016). It's also important to be aware of the moon phase and any other light pollution risks as this can change your experience.
Lastly, PICK YOUR PARTNER WISELY! This tour group uses kayaks that seat two; one person steering and one doing the rest of the work. You are doing this in a pitch black tunnel of mangrove trees, with fish jumping in and out of your kayak, all while other groups are passing you. If you are with someone who is faint of heart or doesn't think quick on their feet, you may very well end up in the water. It's shallow enough to stand up but still not an experience I feel many would enjoy. If you're thinking of proposing to your significant other, take them on this tour first and see how they do. :p read lessKatie W1/25/2018MAGICAL EXPERIENCE! Excellent job done by the tour guys👏👏👏
