Questions? FAQ
The answers you need
Yes, most of our guests have little or no experience. We provide all the necessary training and instruction needed to have an enjoyable and safe experience. We also paddle in double-seat kayaks (which are exceptionally stable).
Fitness Requirements. You will paddle for two miles, one mile in and one mile out, at a moderate pace. As a result, you should be reasonably fit and agile (with upper body strength) to get in and out of the kayak while keeping your back at a 90-degree angle.
Are we able to swim in the lagoon?
No, we are not allowed to swim to preserve the ecosystem. Things that we use on a daily basis can have an effect on the microorganisms (hair gel, deodorant, lotions, perfume, insect repellent with DEET, etc.).
Is it safe for kids?
Yes, this is a great activity to immerse kids in nature. The minimum age to do the adventure is 6 years old.
Can I take pictures?
You can bring water cameras, however, photos of the Bioluminescence need special film and equipment. If you value your digital camera leave it in your car. Remember, this is an adventure for your memory.
Should I bring water and snacks?
We provide water and snacks (chips and granola bars) after the adventure.
Weight capacity?
The maximum weight limit per kayak is 450 lbs (204kg), with no more than 225 lbs (102kg) per person.

In our group a few kayaks had to be towed in one direction or another, and I have not laughed so much as I did while we tried to figure out how to work together and not run into mangroves. The staff and equipment were excellent. It is very dark and you really need to know how to kayak at least a "little". I felt sorry for the guides who had to deal with novices who slowed the whole group down. My only complaint is that the whole mangrove and bay is TOO crowded because local authorities have licensed too many tour groups. You have to stay on your toes to stat with your guide and group and not get confused by other kayaks in the channel with our tour groups doing the same thing. Kayaking at night in the mangroves and bay is cool but it is crowded. read less

We took the later night tour on a sliver moon night, so it was definitely dark. There are a large number of kayaking outfitters for this trip, and it feels crowded as you go in. The frustrating part is the fact that many had no clue how to paddle or steer in a kayak and those rookies made it very frustrating as they rushed, bumped and hollered at each other while trying to navigate through the mangroves. The large lagoon and bioluminescent waters were gorgeous but I echo that we weren't in that area long enough. I would recommend that these companies split up the newcomers from those with some kayaking experience. And everyone should note that coming out of the bay is more work than going in, so if you're not fit for paddling, you may want to reconsider! Our 11- and 14-year old daughters enjoyed this very much, and we saw younger kids doing just fine and being wowed by the glowing water. Island Kayak Adventures did a good job taking our reservation, sending directions, welcoming us, explaining the tour, and helping those in need. read less

Playing with the glowing plankton was amazing. Dont expect the whole bay to be glowing. You have to agitate the water to really see the light show. Definitely worth doing. The paddling out was against the current and a little challenging. You are navigating through a mangrove forest in near total darkness. The biggest nuisance are the people who went on this trip and did not know how to paddle a kayak and kept running into other boats or tree branches, and then were rude. read less

My friends and I saw a ton of bioluminescence, with and without using the tarp that they provide to block out light; Thankfully we went on a night that was very dark and cloudy. It was AMAZING and so beautiful to see! Our tour guide Danny was very helpful and answered questions that we had about the hurricanes and the phytoplankton; he was very kind and calm with our group. The other tour guide Kenny led the group and kept us together. I appreciate that both guides are bilingual because our group spoke English and Spanish, so we needed both.
The only thing is that it’s a bit chaotic and you don’t get much guidance from the guides; thankfully I have a lot of kayaking experience so paddling in complete darkness was ok, but there are a lot of branches and things to look out for (which could have been communicated more clearly as we approached them). I wore bug spray and had no problems with bugs. You either need to wear water shoes or take your shoes off when they tell you to at the beginning, and a bathing suit/waterproof bottoms are good. Overall this was a beautiful, fun, and impressive experience. Thank you Danny and Kenny! read lessJmohanasian10/06/2021Bioluminescent kayak tour AWESOME!!!! The kayaking through the mangroves was extraordinary - truly. The actual bioluminescent time was very short, under a wet, stinky tarp, and "neat" - the plankton lighting is NOTHING like the pictures on the website show it to be... NOTHING.I was honestly a little annoyed by the music being played by other groups, and i also heard it coming from one of our own tour guides kayaks - i feel like the "music" should come from nature, in an experience like this. The mangrove kayaking was worth the money - i just wished our kayaks didn't have to be tied together to experience the bioluminescent part - not enough space between kayaks to really experience it. Again, it was "nice". read less

As there were 5 of us I rented a car to drive here rather than rely on the minibus, and this gave us opportunity to look around Las Croabas Park and get a really good meal too.
There are several kayak companies working here but they coordinated very well. We hardly noticed the other 2 or 3 groups going out on the same trip as us.
The kayaking is gentle and the guides were great in keeping us aligned. It was really cool kayaking through the mangrove canal and then into the bay.
We had some moonlight so had to use the tarpaulin to get the full effects, but it was a really great experience.
Obviously, you will get wet in a kayak, so bring a towel and a change of clothes. The public changing facilities are very limited and get wet quickly, so be warned.
The trick is to set your expectations accordingly. This is an outdoor adventure and you have to "go with the flow" to some extent.
The guys also provide water and snacks and really don't bother to take a camera as you should just experience the trip through your eyes and not through a cellphone trying to take pictures that simply won't work.

There are multiple companies doing the same thing at the same time so it can be overwhelming at times. Our group had 4 guides with 15 kayaks. We went at 6pm, but the best time to go is the 8pm option because the darker the better.
Warning: this isn't a relaxing experience! You have to actively paddle your kayak (it's a double seater) for a solid 45 minutes (one way) in an extremely narrow canal in darkness. Each company's kayak has a colored light at the tail end so you can identify where your groups is. And with so many companies going at the same time, it gets chaotic, especially since you can't see anything. I was disappointed to see that there is a company with boats that go up and down the canal with the kayaks- very dangerous! Once we reached the lagoon, we all floated together holding on to each other's kayaks until it was dark enough to see the lights in the water.
The lights cannot be caught on camera, perhaps video. One of our group members lost his go pro so try not to bring anything! In order for the lights to show, you have to wiggle your hands/foot/paddle in the water. The way back would have been cool if we weren't stuck behind a boat with it's back light on, meaning the lights in the water couldn't be seen. This is something you had to do in Puerto Rico because I'm pretty sure its unique to this island, but I wasn't too impressed.
At the end of the tour, they have snacks and water. They take two pictures, which they post online for free.
You will get very wet so bring a change of clothes. The women's restroom only has 2 stalls (never any toilet paper) so be prepared for a long line. read lesswischme773/13/2015Island Kayaking Adventure - Bioluminescent Bay Paddling through the mangroves, splashing sparkling bioluminescent water on my wife, and the star filled night sky!
