Las Cabezas de San Juan is a beautiful place and they (Island Kayaking) helped us experienced it further. The guides instructed us and our little girl on the safety and procedures of the tour as well as how to better use de kayak and oars – pretty important for the 7-year-old with us. Once the tour started there were four guides with the group (about 16 persons in the group) and they were always close by making sure nobody got stuck in the mangroves ?? ??♂️. Once we arrived at the Laguna Grande we could roam the area close by. Then they gathered everybody as the night finally came around to explain how bioluminescence works and to experience it first hand. It was amazing and beautiful!.
We stayed there for about 30 minutes and started to head, which was an adventure in itself. Traveling the channels of mangroves at night it is funny and cool. There are light in the kayaks and the guides have lights on them too but it's pretty dark nevertheless so it was an engaging experience to hear the animals at night, see the starry sky and just be surrounded by nature – and some "light" crashing onto other kayakers.
Soon after that, came the end of the adventure, everybody happy, our girl was very excited about what she learned and experienced. I fully recommend this trip to anyone living in Puerto Rico or visiting. After reading so many reviews about the bio bay kyacking then doing it myself I believe the following....
1). People who have never done anything physical in their life try to get on a kyack for what is clearly advertised as a 2 hour tour then complain because nobody told them that they would actually need to paddle. Net result - if you want to be fat and lazy choose the electric boat not a kyack.
2). People complain they only got 5 minutes in the bay but they did say that the bulk of the kyacking through the mangroves gives the same experience of biobay and in some cases better since part do mangrove channel is darker than the bay. Island adventures guides pointed this out early in the trip out to the lagoon which was great....kids started playing immediately.
3). People complain about the kyacking in the mangroves.....this has nothing to do with the guide or tour company at all. Yes you need to paddle through a mangrove channel and yes it is dark. Island adventures did a great job of explaining the situation and tel, ling everyone what to do, how to follow each other, how to avoid hitting the trees what to do if you do hit a tree etc. ....absolutely perfect. Our group was pretty good at the whole kyack thing but there were a few that obviously did not listen to the guides.....I am sure they are the types of people that complain about guides not caring.
4). Suggest you do the early trip. It lets you see the mangroves that you kyack through on the way out to the lagoon then on the return trip it is totally dark at least you know what is around you.
5). Unfortunately the bulk of the experience has to do with the group of people you are with due to the kyacking itself. If you have a group of people who can barely walk on their own two feet then you probably will not get a good experience since they won't be able to control the kyack and your guides will need to hold the whole group up waiting for the slow people.
Overall island adventures did great for my family....friendly, good English, good information about the lagoon the reason the history etc, new life jackets, and in general we had a great time. read lessbdonohue718/22/2012Highlight of our trip! The water was so calm and smooth, we just coasted along. The pitch dark mangrove was so peaceful, and you follow each other single file, I told my husband I felt like we were on a Disney ride! Then before you know it, it opens up to a huge lagoon where every stroke of your oar, or swish of your hand in the water lights up beautiful blue glow! Magical! I enjoyed the explanation our guide gave about these bioluminescent plankton. Such a cool experience. Then back to the launch, where there are several open air bars and restaurants. As there were 5 of us I rented a car to drive here rather than rely on the minibus, and this gave us opportunity to look around Las Croabas Park and get a really good meal too.
There are several kayak companies working here but they coordinated very well. We hardly noticed the other 2 or 3 groups going out on the same trip as us.
The kayaking is gentle and the guides were great in keeping us aligned. It was really cool kayaking through the mangrove canal and then into the bay.
We had some moonlight so had to use the tarpaulin to get the full effects, but it was a really great experience.
Obviously, you will get wet in a kayak, so bring a towel and a change of clothes. The public changing facilities are very limited and get wet quickly, so be warned.
The trick is to set your expectations accordingly. This is an outdoor adventure and you have to "go with the flow" to some extent.
The guys also provide water and snacks and really don't bother to take a camera as you should just experience the trip through your eyes and not through a cellphone trying to take pictures that simply won't work.

It was through Castillo tours but I think they sent us out to this place. We were picked up by Hector and taken to Fajardo. It was about an hour drive. We arrived and paid our fees and were suited up and in line for the kayaks. It was all very organized. The guides were helpful if you needed them. I was happy that they let my family of three have a single kayak so we could all ride together. Going to the bay was challenging for the less experiences kayakers. We definitely had to watch out for others as they went all different directions. We all made it through the mangrove tunnel and into the bay safely. We were then lined up and able to stick our hands into the water. The glow is fascinating. We then were instructed it was time to head back. This part is challenging! You pretty much have to follow the glow sticks attached to the kayak in front of you. It was a little scary because it was pitch black and hard to see if you were about to run into the mangroves but isn't that part of the adventure? I am inexperienced with a kayak and I was worried about falling into the water. No one fell in at all and I definitely recommend giving this one a try. It is a memory you will never forget. They also supply you with a picture on their facebook page for free. read less

They gave us custom driving directions from our hotel and the woman that checked us in was very nice and offered to lock up our wallets, etc. so we didn't have to leave them in the car. Our guides were also very nice and informative (I think our lead guide was Miguel, my apologies if I am wrong). There was a young woman in our group who had some trouble kayaking and they gave her extra attention and ended up connecting her kayak to one of the guides to help her out. Since you shouldn't bring a non-waterproof camera, they even take your picture and then post it on their Facebook page so you can download it for free. Once you get to the lagoon, they pull out a big tarp to put over all the kayaks to make it extra dark so you can see the glow better (it's really more like sparkles in the water). Overall, it was a great experience and I'd recommend them. Just don't believe the pictures on their website and brochures. I highly doubt the glow is ever that intense. read less

We started off at about 615 in the dark. Once we reached the mangrove canal it was pitch dark. It was easy to paddle right into the tree branches as you can not see anything unless the hide flashes his light.
Once we got to the lagoon we were told to put a tarp over our heads to see the glow of the organism. We could not have stayed for more than 15 minutes. It would have been nice if they did not rush us back. The tour company has another late night tour which they have to get back for.
The glow is not like what I had imagined. It was more along sparks from static electricity. Other reviewers wrote that it was amazing. I did not feel it was very spectacular but it might just be the night we were there.
What was spectacular was the experience of kayaking at night through the mangrove canals.
I wouldn't say the guides were informative or went out of their way to make you feel comfortable. They were just their to lead the way.
Overall enjoyable. read lessAtlantaLucky711/27/2015 -
